Liposuction is a surgical procedure that permanently removes fat cells in order to reshape specific areas of your body and can be performed nearly anywhere on the body, but it has proven particularly effective in the abdomen, waist, back, hips, and thighs. It may also be performed on the neck, arms, buttocks and knees. Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic plastic surgery procedures at Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center and is suitable for both men and women who are in good general health.
When diet and exercise alone are not producing the desired results, you may consider liposuction to aid in the elimination of excess pockets of fat in stubborn areas. It is important to remember that liposuction is not a primary treatment for obesity.
Dr. Michael Thornton uses a traditional tumescent liposuction technique called suction assisted liposuction (SAL), whereby a small cannula is inserted through small ports made in your skin and attached to a suction machine. The fat is permanently removed using a gentle back and forth motion, but to maintain safety of the procedure, there is a limit on how much fat can be removed during one session. Elastic garments are worn for up to four weeks and strenuous physical activity is restricted to aid in healing, however, most clients are able to engage in light activity the day after surgery.
Power Assisted Liposuction PAL, uses a specialized hand piece with reciprocating motion (circle and back / forth) to facilitate the movement of the liposuction cannula within the fat tissue. This form of liposuction reduces the amount of manual force and physical effort especially in fibrous areas or scar tissue. The result is a better experience for both the surgeon and the patient. Dr. Thornton predominately uses the MicroAire PAL-650 LipoSculptor device for the majority of his lipoabdominoplasty, Brazilian butt lift and mommy make over procedures.
VASER® liposculpting is the most advanced form of liposculpting available today. This advanced technology produces impressive results through the use of low-frequency ultrasound energy to emulsify the fat cells and dislodge the fat by the ultrasound energy through (Acoustic Streaming). The VASER® system is considered the standard technology for high-definition and precision etching of the female and male torso, especially for gynecomastia surgery in men. VASER® is also becoming the preferred technology for fat harvesting during Brazilian Butt Lift procedures because it was specifically designed to maintain the integrity of fat cells or reduce destruction of the fat. The VASER® technology allows surgeons to harvest high quality, viable fat, which can then be re-injected to other parts of the body. Dr. Thornton frequently combines VASER® with MicroAire Power Liposuction to provide the most dynamic results offered today.
What can I expect during my liposuction consultation?
During your liposuction consultation, you will meet privately and exclusively with Dr. Michael Thornton where you will collectively share in the decision making process about your personal needs, desires, and expectations. Although well qualified, we choose not use patient coordinators, nurse practitioners, or physicians assistants to perform your consultation. Dr. Thornton will complete a thorough medical history and perform a careful examination, including the location of fat deposits and the quality of your skin. The extent of liposuction depends on the amount of fat deposits and the number of areas treated. Liposuction body contouring surgery is not recommended for all clients and this determination will be made on an individual basis.
Where will my liposuction surgery take place?
Large volume liposuction surgery procedures are performed at Baylor Surgicare at Mansfield, a AAAHC certified out-patient surgery center, located in Mansfield, Texas. On average, the procedure will take 3 – 4 hours to complete, depending upon the complexity of the case and the number of body zones treated. Furthermore, all large volume procedures are performed using general anesthesia as provided by board-certified anesthesiologists. However, small volume procedures may be performed in our office using oral sedation and local tumescent anesthesia.
