Liposuction Surgery

Serving clients near Mansfield, Arlington, Fort Worth & Dallas, Texas

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that permanently removes fat cells in order to reshape specific areas of your body and can be performed nearly anywhere on the body, but it has proven particularly effective in the abdomen, waist, back, hips, and thighs. It may also be performed on the neck, arms, buttocks and knees.

When diet and exercise alone are not producing the desired results, you may consider liposuction to aid in the elimination of excess fat in stubborn areas. Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic plastic surgery procedures at Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center and is suitable for both men and women who are in good general health.

It is important to remember that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity.

Dr. Michael Thornton uses an advanced technique in liposuction surgery called Power Assisted Liposuction or PAL to mainly perform his liposuction procedures.  This advance form of liposuction uses a specialized hand piece with reciprocating motion (circle and back / forth) to facilitate easier movement of the liposuction cannula within the fat tissue.  This reduces the amount of manual force, tissue trauma, and physical effort, thus providing a better experience for both the surgeon and the patient.

Dr. Thornton uses the MicroAire PAL-650 LipoSculptor device for the majority of his liposuction, lipoabdominoplasty, Brazilian butt lift and mommy make over procedures.

Fat is permanently removed using a gentle back and forth motion, but to maintain safety of the procedure, there is a limit on how much fat can be removed during one session. Elastic garments are worn for up to four weeks and strenuous physical activity is restricted to aid in healing, however, most clients are able to engage in light activity the day after surgery.

VASER® liposculpting is one the most advanced form of liposculpting available today.  This more advanced technology produces impressive results through the use of low-frequency ultrasound energy to emulsify the fat cells and dislodge the fat by the ultrasound energy through (Acoustic Streaming).  The VASER system is considered the standard technology for high-definition and precision etching of the female and male torso, especially for gynecomastia surgery in men.

VASER is also becoming a preferred technology for fat harvesting during Brazilian Butt Lift procedures because it was specifically designed to maintain the integrity of fat cells or reduce destruction of the fat.  The VASER technology allows surgeons to harvest high quality, viable fat, which can then be re-injected to other parts of the body.  Dr. Thornton frequently combines VASER with MicroAire Power Liposuction to provide the most dynamic results offered today.

What can I expect during my liposuction consultation?

During your liposuction consultation, you will meet privately and exclusively with Dr. Michael Thornton where you will collectively share in the decision making process about your personal needs, desires, and expectations.  Dr. Thornton will complete a thorough medical history and perform a careful examination, including the location of fat deposits and the quality of your skin.  The extent of liposuction depends on the amount of fat deposits and the number of areas treated.  Liposuction body contouring surgery is not recommended for all clients and this determination will be made on an individual basis.

Where will my liposuction surgery take place?

Large volume liposuction surgery procedures are performed at Baylor Surgicare at Mansfield, a AAAHC certified out-patient surgery center, located in Mansfield, Texas. On average, the procedure will take 3 – 4  hours to complete, depending upon the complexity of the case and the number of body zones treated.  Furthermore, all large volume procedures are performed using general anesthesia as provided by board-certified anesthesiologists.  However, small volume procedures may be performed in our office using oral sedation and local tumescent anesthesia.

What is Body Mass Index (BMI) and how can I determine if I am an optimal candidate for elective cosmetic surgery?

During your consultation, Dr. Thornton will calculate your Body Mass Index or BMI to help determine if you are an optimal candidate for elective cosmetic surgery. Calculating your BMI will help Dr. Thornton identify areas of your health you may need to improve before pursuing elective cosmetic surgery.

An elevated BMI increases surgical risks and complications, including problems with wound healing, infections, and need for revision surgery.  Therefore, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight will dramatically decrease any potential problems that may arise during or after your elective cosmetic surgery.

  • Normal weight: If your BMI falls in the “normal weight” range, you are considered an optimal candidate for elective cosmetic surgery.
  • Overweight:  If your BMI falls in the "overweight" range, you are likely considered a good candidate for elective cosmetic surgery but dietary restrictions and an increase in physical activity may be recommended.
  • Obese: If your BMI falls in the “obese” range or BMI > 30, Dr. Thornton will likely recommend that you reduce your BMI to a healthier category before undergoing elective cosmetic surgery, although individual recommendations are made at the time of consultation.
