Are you a breast reduction candidate?
Common complaints that necessitate breast reduction surgery due to overly enlarged breast include neck pain, back and shoulder pain, shoulder notching from a tight bra strap, irritation and infection of the skin under the breast, and difficulty in finding appropriate fitting tops and blouses.
Dr. Michael Thornton commonly places breast reduction incisions around the dark skin of your areola and along the underside breast crease thus creating an anchor incision using a superior or superior-medial vascular pedicle and a Wise pattern skin resection. However, Dr. Michael Thornton provides every effort to minimize the size of your scars and to make them as inconspicuous as possible using natural creases and folds and providing scar tape following your surgery. During the breast reduction procedure the nipple-areola complex is elevated to a new position and lower and lateral breast tissue and skin is removed, thus restoring your breasts to a smaller and youthful appearance, with more fullness and projection.
Other options for female breast reduction surgery include Breast Liposuction, whereby the majority of breast fat is permanently removed with liposuction without the removal of skin and glandular breast tissue. Therefore, the risks of breast scarring and other complications are minimized. Dr. Thornton uses VASER assisted liposculpture and power assisted liposuction techniques to minimize bruising and promote skin retraction. Breast liposuction is a highly specialized procedure and is not suitable for women who have severe breast droopiness or major skin excess, as this procedure does not reposition or elevate the nipple areola complex.
What are the expectations during my breast reduction consultation?
During your breast reduction consultation, you will meet privately and exclusively with Dr. Michael Thornton where you will collectively share in the decision making process about your personal needs, desires, and expectations regarding a breast reduction. Although well qualified, we choose not use patient coordinators, nurse practitioners, or physicians assistants to perform your consultation. Dr. Thornton will take measurements of various key areas of your breasts and demonstrate scar placement, proposed elevation of your new nipple and areola, and amount of expected breast tissue to be permanently removed.
Where will my breast reduction surgery take place?
All breast augmentation, mastopexy, breast reduction and breast revision procedures are performed under general anesthesia at Baylor Surgicare at Mansfield, a AAAHC certified out-patient surgery center, located in Mansfield, Texas. On average, a breast reduction procedure will take 4 to 6 hours to complete, depending upon the complexity of the procedure and other client dependent personal circumstances. Furthermore, all breast reduction procedures are performed using general anesthesia as provided by board-certified anesthesiologists and certified anesthesia providers.
What is my expected breast reduction recovery?
Following your breast reduction procedure, you will recover at the surgery center until you are safe to be discharged and go home with an appropriate care giver. You will be provided with post operative instructions, narcotic pain medication, antibiotics, and nausea medication. You may consider talking a shower the next morning. Dr. Thornton will monitor your progress weekly to monthly for the first 6 months and at 12 months. Surgery photographs will be taken at 3 – 4 months as this is the average time where you will begin to notice the most optimal appearance. Results will vary from one patient to the other and patients are expected to have realistic expectations following breast augmentation.
