The ideal male body shape is considered to be trim and athletic-looking, with broad shoulders and a broad chest, a flat abdomen, and a narrow hip-thigh ratio. However, as men age or as male hormones changes areas of fat tend to accumulate around the breast area or leading to gynecomastia.
Mostly, gynecomastia is self-limiting and is managed with reassurance and conservative, nonsurgical therapy. The cause of gynecomastia is not clear although it may relate to an imbalance between testosterone and estrogen hormones. Appropriate measurement of circulating hormone levels, including estrogen, testosterone, and prolactin should be obtained by your private physician to complete the differential diagnosis. Gynecomastia is also acquired through the use of exogenous steroids and hormones or by the ingestion of specific types of medications, herbal vitamins, and work-out supplements that may interfere with the normal balance of circulating testosterone and estrogen.
Are you a gynecomastia surgery candidate?
Male clients who are experiencing visual abnormalities in the size of one or both areolas, expeiencing tenderness or discomfort in the areolas or breast tissue, or experiencing an undesirable male aesthetic appearance when going without a shirt may be candidates for gynecomastia surgery.
Dr. Michael Thornton, a double-board certified cosmetic surgeon and Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery has vast experience in the surgical treatment of male gynecomastia of various forms. Most male clients present to our office with breast tenderness or feeling of a lump in one or both breasts directly under the nipple / areola region along with surrounding fat. If the breast tissue mass in enlarged and easily felt with fingers it must be surgically removed to provide the best aesthetic appearance, as liposuction alone will not effectively remove the breast tissue.
Dr. Thornton also performs secondary or revision gynecomastia surgery when a male client presents with retained or left-over breast tissue following failed liposuction. Therefore, if you had previous liposuction of the chest and still able to feel a lump or mass under your nipple areola complex, then you are an ideal candidate for secondary or revision gynecomastia surgery.
In most all cases Dr. Michael Thornton will perform VASER liposculpting and high definition liposuction of the chest wall overlying the pectoralis muscle to effectively remove breast fat. In addition, male clients will also need to undergo direct removal of the fibrous gland portion of the enlarged breast tissue during the same surgery. It is important to not only remove the surrounding fat but to also remove the enlarged breast tissue, otherwise you will not achieve an ideal aesthetic appearance. Finally, a small select few clients may also require a male mastopexy or skin removal to provide the ideal aesthetic appearance. These clients have usually lost weight and present with loose chest wall skin.
What can I expect during my gynecomastia surgery consultation?
During your gynecomastia consultation, you will meet privately and exclusively with Dr. Michael Thornton where you will collectively share in the decision making process about your personal needs, desires, and expectations regarding gynecomastia surgery. Although well qualified, we choose not use patient coordinators, nurse practitioners, or physicians assistants to perform your consultation. Dr. Thornton will take measurements and assess the amount of gynecomastia tissue and any potential skin excess that may require additional surgical measures. A complete surgical treatment plan will be outlined along expected recovery.
Where will my gynecomastia surgery take place?
All gynecomastia procedures are performed under general anesthesia at Baylor Surgicare at Mansfield, a AAAHC certified out-patient surgery center, located in Mansfield, Texas. On average, it will take 2 – 4 hours to complete, depending upon the complexity of the case. Furthermore, all gynecomastia procedures are performed using general anesthesia as provided by board-certified anesthesiologists and certified anesthesia providers. Because of the delicate nature of the areas treated, our office does not perform or believe in performing ‘awake’ gynecomastia surgery procedures.
