Gynecomastia Surgery – What is the Bottom Line?
Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction surgery, is one of our top procedures for men at Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center. Dr. Michael L. Thornton, a double board certified cosmetic surgeon and Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, has helped many of our male clients regain their confidence who no longer worry about their appearance.
What is gynecomastia or man boobs?
Man boobs are what you see when excess breast tissue appears as breasts on men. The excess tissue is either in the form of fat cells or in the form of enlarged glandular tissue caused by hormonal imbalances between testosterone and estrogen. However, sometimes gynecomastia results from the development of both excess fat cells and enlarged breast glandular tissue. Due to specific circumstances of the natural aging process, medical conditions, or prescribed medications, many male clients may experience a hormonal imbalance causing an over production of the female hormone estrogen, thus leading to the medical condition called gynecomastia.
Thankfully, Dr. Michael Thornton can successfully treat gynecomastia through a combination of advanced ultrasonic liposuction technology called VASER and direct surgical removal of the glandular breast tissue through precise incisions.
Gynecomastia or Male Breast Reduction Explained
At Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center, Dr. Michael Thornton explains gynecomastia surgery, “Gynecomastia surgery is a surgical procedure that eliminates fat and breast glandular tissue using our ultrasonic VASER technology to melt the fat, followed by liposuction to extract the fat. Finally, residual and excess breast glandular tissue is removed through a small incision I placed adjacent to the areola. Ultimately, this combination of VASER liposuction and surgical removal of the glandular tissue, completely eliminates the gynecomastia condition.” The gynecomastia surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually take 2 hours or less to complete. Final recovery may take 4 to 6 months but we see typical improvement in about 2-3 weeks. Our clients are expected to wear a compression chest garment for several weeks following surgery.
Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery
The benefits of gynecomastia surgery are seen immediately since the reduction of male breasts includes a flatter, firmer chest, sculpted pectoral muscles and a defined upper body contour. For clients having undergone significant weight loss or following bariatric surgery, gynecomastia surgery may also reshape large or drooping breasts by removing excess skin and resizing the areola. This surgery may also be combined with other procedures such as abdominal liposuction to support the modification to the chest.
Treating gynecomastia and effectively eliminating excess male breast tissue will improve your lifestyle by allowing you to feel more confident in your appearance. During your consultation for gynecomastia surgery with Dr. Michael Thornton, he will ask you about the particular bothersome traits about your chest that you want corrected and your gynecomastia procedure can be customized based upon how much modification you desire.
